How much does it cost?

Many promoters of podcasting will tell you that having a cheap microphone, a computer & free open source software, allows you to podcast and therefore podcasting is almost free. This is true but the same could be said of building your own website or painting a picture!

So how much does it really cost?
This depends essentially on time, and the most time consuming part of podcasting is preparing content, recording and editing. If you possess existing audio e.g. a conference speech or you clearly know the message you wish to convey, you will spend less time preparing. Show preparation is generally prepared by the client who should be aware of the indirect cost involved i.e. their time.

The length & number of podcast shows recorded will affect time. A general rule of thumb is that for every minute recorded, 3 minutes will be spent in editing & mastering by an experienced sound engineer. A lot more if you try it yourself!

Hiring a voice over actor will greatly increase your budget but is generally only required for the most professional broadcast standard podcasts. For many people working a script and being recorded is daunting but with some coaching and audio editing / mastering we can make you sound great.

Hosting your podcasts on a server will add a cost of around £10 pounds a month although in the beginning you may well be able to host the podcasts on your website hosting package at no additional expense. Bandwidth is an important issue as podcasts that have, say +100,000 listeners, use a fair amount of bandwidth & specialised hosting packages are required to keep the cost low. Astral Voices will advise their clients and keep track of these issues.
